Natural Remedies for Swollen Hands

Is the swelling caused by gout? If it is, then you should start avoiding or limiting your intake of poultry, fish, meat, and alcohol. It is recommended that you reduce sodium in your diet and drink lots of water. Doing so will help reduce the swelling that is caused by various factors.

You can do strength and stretching exercises to move your wrist and hand muscles. This can help pump back the excess fluid to your heart.

Hand massages are also effective in decreasing the swelling. However, if both exercise and massage cause pain, it is advised that you do it after a warm bath. It can help you tolerate the activities.

  1. Elevation

You can do an elevation exercise 30 minutes daily. You can do that by elevating the extremities above your heart to increase the blood flow. When done correctly, you can possibly reduce swelling.

Using pillows to elevate your forearms at night can also be a big help.

  1. Ice

Inflammation, swelling, and pain can be treated through applying a commercial-bought cold pack. You can use this technique during emergency situations and even for long-term conditions.

Be extra careful as ice can cause injury to your skin. To prevent that, you should wrap the ice first with a towel before applying it to your swollen hands. Moreover, you should only place it on your skin for not more than 20 minutes at a time.

  1. Rest

If you feel like your hands are swelling due to an activity, it is best that you stop whatever you’re doing and take a rest.

However, if it’s quite impossible to do that, especially when it’s related to work, you can find ways to alter your hand movements. Use cushions, a different keyboard, or wear splints.

  1. Compression
